Post Holiday and a huge favor!

Snowy Christmas Eve
Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!  All three of our boys decided it was the perfect time to get sick. Yesterday I was bestowed the gift of not feeling so great as well.  I was hoping to ward it off, but no such luck.  Today's weather isn't so great either.  We are experiencing what I would refer to as a snow/sleet mixture.  However, the weather combined with not feeling so great has provided wonderful time today for stitching and no shopping.  I am finishing up my current reproduction and so far it has been really fun to stitch.  The sampler was originally stitched in 1847 and features a cherub, church, a couple of baskets and a couple of flower pots.  I am now working on the verse which is stitched over one.  In the sampler I am using Lakeside Linen and Gloriana Silks.  As soon as I finish and press I will share a photo because the next stop will be the framers.

Tomorrow, though provided the roads are not icy I will be making the trek to In Stitches for their annual after Christmas early opening.  If you wear your PJs you receive a little goodie for the effort.  For the past couple of years I have donned the flannel, very comfy PJ set.  I must admit the Starbuck folks look a little puzzled when I walk in with my PJs.

I do have a huge favor to ask those of you who peruse my blog.  My next design is an original and I am toying with adding a few stitches other than the traditional cross stitch.  Leave a comment and let me know your thoughts on a sampler with speciality stitches included.  Next Wednesday I will use the random number generator to pick a winner to receive a stitching goody bag.

  3. I enjoy doing specialty stitches. It sometimes breaks up the monotony of cross stitching and adds texture to the sampler. And as Carmen above mentioned, it's good to include a stitch guide of whatever stitch(es) you decide to use. Look forward to seeing the design and hope you're feeling better.

  4. Hi LaDonna, being sick on Christmas is the worst!

I have fun with specialty stitches too, but they have to be in keeping with the overall design of the piece. If it'a a traditional band sampler, specialty stitches are well suited. But if the piece is a primitive or a school girl style then simplicity is best.

Can't wait to see what youve come up with!

  5. So sorry about the illness! That doesn't make for a happy holiday season. I enjoy a few specialty stitches because it forces you to possibly learn a few new stitches! Good luck with your creation!

  6. Specialty stitches are fun! They cause us to learn something new, stretch us in unexpected ways, and many times cross stitches can be substituted for the beginner stitcher. I vote yes for specialty stitches!

Hope you are all feeling better soon!

  8. If they fit in with the rest of the sampler, specialty stitches are a good addition.

  10. Many samplers have specialty stitches on them. I think that stitchers are not surprised if they are there :)
I hope that you are feeling better!

Happy New Year to you and yours! I am sure a sampler with specialty stitches would be wonderful...it addes texture and can be very fun to stitch!....some like them and some don't depending on how hard they are and how much is included.

  15. I love specialty stitches! I have to admit I tend to replace eyelets with smyrna crosses, and queen stitches aren't my favorites, but adding any kind of specialty stitch makes a project more interesting both to stitch and look at the finished design.

  16. By all means, add the speciality stitches. Samplers used to be the basis for learning all the "fancy" stitches.
