Family

Last weekend we made the trip for the Nash Family Reunion in southwest Virginia in a small town situated on top of the mountain.  We stayed at The Inn at Wise which located on Main Street next to the Wise County Courthouse.  The Inn was bought a few years ago and the new owners completely restored the Inn making it a beautiful hotel and pleasant visit.  So nice to go somewhere everyone is friendly and welcoming.  Next door to the Inn is the Wise County Courthouse.

Friday night we made the trip to the Nash Family Cemetary.  Always something to visit the Cemetary and know you are related to everyone who has been laid to rest.  Afterwards we headed back to the Inn for dinner.  Down in the lower area of the hotel there is a Pub that serves wonderful food.  Lance loves their wings and he couldn't wait to visit for dinner.  Saturday morning I always enjoy getting up early sitting on the front porch watching the sun come up.  No one was driving up and down the street it was as if I had the whole morning to myself.

Around 11:30 we headed over to the Nash House.  We were a little early but it allowed me plenty of time to walk around the house and take photos of just the house.  The goal is to restore the house as it was around 1900 which includes a double porch.  There is still a lot of work to be done, but a lot of progress has been made.

Many of you know I love to refinish furniture and I especially have an attraction to chairs.
The chairs painted primitive green patina with the wagon wheel in the background.
In one of the upstairs rooms I fell in love with this unique children's bed.
I have never seen one made like this.   Since it was handmade the piece may be
one of a kind.  All I know is I would love to find one.
These floors definitely show some age but they have a beautiful color and patina

We didn't have to wait too long before the everyone began to show up.  Amazing how many people descended from two individuals.  Now granted they had fourteen children but still it amazes me.
Along with the group comes lot's of food and lot's of items for sale or to be auctioned to help raise money for the restoration of the house.   Including a quilt raffle and a quilt that was made by one of Wicklief and Louisa's grand-daughters and is referred to by everyone as Aunt Sue.

Table full of auction items along with items for sale.
Among the guest for the day was my grandmother's baby sister who everyone refers to as Nanny Bee She is 90 years old she was born in the house and lived there until after her father's death.  Unfortunately this is the only photo I had taken of her and it is blurry.
Some of the auction items included a family quilt made by Aunt Sue who lived to be over 100 years old and was the highest priced item for the day.  Even though I did bid I kept my senses and stopped others kept going.  It eventually stopped at $3k and all proceeds go to the restoration of the house.  Another quilt that included photos of the fourteen children of Wicklief and Louisa Nash.  As well as a quilt that was raffled off to a lucky winner.
Antique quilt stitched by Aunt Sue and auctioned off to the highest bidder and raised $3000.00
Quilt made using photos of all fourteen children raised $1200.00
The festivities last all day and everyone returns back in the evening to share stories and sit by the bonfire.  Lance and I headed back for the evening festivities.  The large rock in the front of the yard has probably been photographed with every family member that has made the trip to the house.  The kids were playing on top as they were waiting for the bonfire to start and pizza to arrive.

I was able to get a few photos of Lance standing on the rock - not too hard to get a little boy to climb up a rock to get to the top.  I chose to walk around and up the incline around the back of the rock.
